Artist Bio: Gilbert Portanier , a French sculptor, painter, illustrator and ceramicist, found himself at Vallauris, France in 1948, switched mediums from painting on canvas to working with clay, developing a long-time friendship with Pablo Picasso, who was also creating art in clay at Vallauris then, and produced brilliant works out of the studios there for years. He later worked for Rosenthal starting in 1964 as a designer, and created this exuberant, very successful line for them in the 70's, working with a soft white porcelain base, simple, elegant shapes, and decorating it all with wild abstract art, resulting in pieces like this bowl and vase. And of course because it is a Rosenthal item, it's beautifully made to last more than a lifetime as an heirloom piece.
